Current Landscape
As of 2020, there were approximately 6,577 registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers in Australia. Notably, over half (57%) of these educators are under 40 years old, indicating a youthful and vibrant workforce. In addition, 80% serve in government schools, with nearly half (46%) positioned in primary education settings. A significant portion (48%) work in regional or remote areas, underscoring their vital role in diverse communities.
Encouraging Trends in Initial Teacher Education (ITE)
The pipeline for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators shows positive momentum. In 2019, 644 students from these backgrounds commenced ITE programs, marking a 20% increase since 2005. This growth is complemented by a rising preference for flexible study modes; online and multi-modal programs accounted for 51% of these commencements in 2019, up from 33% in 2005. Such adaptability facilitates access to teacher education for a broader range of individuals, including those balancing other commitments.

Recognising this, various programs and initiatives are in place to support career transitions into teaching, ensuring that aspiring educators receive the necessary training and mentorship to thrive in their new roles.
AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program: Cultivating a Diverse Teaching Workforce
The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program is an innovative approach to teacher education that offers immersive, school-based experiences for initial teacher education students. The program enables these trainee educators to work within Independent schools for at least one day per week throughout the academic year, effectively bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application.
A key objective of the Teaching School Hubs program is to attract a diverse range of professionals into the teaching profession, including individuals from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds and those considering a career change. By providing hands-on experience and mentorship, the program supports career changers in seamlessly transitioning into the educational sector, enriching the workforce with varied perspectives and experiences. This initiative is instrumental in building an inclusive educational environment that benefits all students.
A Bright Future Ahead
The decline in the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers intending to leave the profession before retirement—from 34% in 2019 to 29% in 2020—reflects growing satisfaction and stability within the workforce. This positive trend, coupled with the increasing number of ITE commencements and completions, highlights a strengthening foundation for the continued growth and influence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators in Australia.
