Partnerships are key
The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program
The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program, initially piloted in select NSW schools, was designed to attract high-quality, diverse initial teacher education students from regional and metropolitan areas to the education profession. Today, the program is utilised in 26 schools across NSW, QLD and SA.
A cornerstone of the AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program is the robust partnerships established between AISNSW, universities, and Independent schools. These collaborations are fundamental to the program’s success, ensuring a comprehensive and cohesive approach to initial teacher education. The joint efforts among these entities have created an innovative model that enriches the training experience for initial teacher education students (Education Trainees).

Universities play a pivotal role in shaping the academic journey of the Education Trainees, aligning their curricula with the hands-on experiences provided by the program. This synergy between theoretical knowledge and practical application helps Education Trainees develop a well-rounded understanding of the teaching profession. The collaboration ensures that university studies are complemented by real-world classroom experience, fostering a seamless transition from student to educator.
Independent schools offer a unique environment where Education Trainees can immerse themselves in the day-to-day activities of teaching. These schools provide the settings where theoretical knowledge is put into practice, enabling Education Trainees to gain firsthand experience. The presence of trained Mentor Teachers within these schools further enhances the learning experience. Mentor Teachers guide Education Trainees through their practical placements, offering support, insights, and feedback that are crucial for their professional growth.
The partnership model also benefits the Independent schools and the Mentor Teachers. Schools gain enthusiastic and motivated future educators who contribute fresh perspectives and ideas. Mentor Teachers have the opportunity to develop their mentorship and leadership skills, often leading to higher levels of professional accreditation and contemplating future leadership roles within their institutions.
Through these partnerships, the AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program creates a supportive and dynamic environment that benefits all stakeholders. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the initial teacher education model but also ensures a sustainable pipeline of high-quality educators for the future.
The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in education. By bridging the gap between theory and practice and fostering strong partnerships among universities, Independent schools, and Mentor Teachers, the program provides Education Trainees with a rich, immersive experience that prepares them for successful careers in teaching. The positive feedback from participants highlights the program’s effectiveness in enhancing confidence, skill development, and professional growth. As the program continues to expand, it promises to play a vital role in shaping the future of education by attracting and nurturing high-quality, diverse educators dedicated to making a difference in their communities.
