Position & Purpose

Snowy Mountains Grammar School is seeking to appoint a Deputy Head of Boarding on a permanent full-time basis commencing in June 2025.

The Deputy Head of Boarding is a key leadership position responsible for the daily operations, culture, and wellbeing of students within one of our boarding houses. This role requires an experienced and compassionate leader who can create a safe, structured, and engaging residential environment for students while supporting a team of boarding supervisors.

This permanent full-time position is offered with the additional responsibility of a middle leadership role being an opportunity for up to five (5) years with the potential to renew the leadership position by mutual agreement for further terms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding pastoral care and wellbeing support to students
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful community within the boarding house
  • Oversee and mentor Level 1 and Level 2 Boarding Supervisors, ensuring a cohesive and effective team
  • Collaborate with school leadership, teachers, and support staff to support student development
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to monitor students’ academic progress and provide study support as needed
  • Develop leadership opportunities for senior students and offer mentoring to support personal development
  • Oversee daily operations, student welfare, discipline, and engagement in boarding life
  • Maintain high standards in safety, compliance, and duty of care, ensuring adherence to school policies and child protection legislation
  • Act as the primary point of contact for parents, maintaining strong communication and positive relationships with families
  • Manage student leave, attendance and sign-in/out processes using boarding management software (e.g. REACH)
  • Ensure facilities are well-maintained and resources are effectively used
  • Ensure risk management and emergency procedures are followed, including overseeing fire drills and student safety protocols
  • Plan and facilitate weekend and evening activities, supporting students’ co-curricular and social development
  • Continuously assess and innovate the boarding program to meet evolving student needs and interests.

Essential Criteria

  • A current NSW Working with Children Check
  • First Aid and CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • A commitment to child safety, wellbeing, and pastoral care in a boarding setting
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, particularly in residential or education settings
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement routines, policies, and structures that support student welfare and boarding operations
  • An understanding of adolescent development and contemporary wellbeing issues
  • Competency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with boarding software systems (e.g., REACH).
