Facility Officer

Position Purpose

As a member of staff, you are expected to support the philosophy and ethos of the College, demonstrating initiative, enthusiasm, professionalism, and reliability. You are required to work collaboratively with all staff—teaching and non-teaching—and contribute to a positive, productive team environment. You are also expected to foster good relationships with students, parents, contractors, and external stakeholders.

 

Key Responsibilities

Property and Maintenance 

  • Oversee and monitor the work of contracted cleaners to ensure a high standard of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety across the College premises. Liaise with the cleaning contractor’s supervisor to address any issues or concerns as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain the availability of essential hygiene and kitchen supplies across staff and student areas, ensuring items such as toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, and common kitchen amenities (e.g. tea, coffee, sugar, milk) are adequately stocked each day.
  • Ensure that all electrical equipment, including lights and air conditioning units in classrooms and common areas, are turned off at the end of each day.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance, repair, and cleaning requests from staff and students.
  • Undertake general labouring and property maintenance tasks, including minor repairs and upkeep of facilities.
  • Assist trades personnel and oversee the work of external contractors as required.
  • Ensure the security and safe operation of all school buildings and property, including responding to emergencies and incidents.
  • Assist with building and refurbishment projects in consultation with the Headmaster or delegate.

Grounds and Gardening 

  • Perform general gardening and horticultural duties, including ground preparation, planting, trimming, lawn care, and maintenance of sports fields and outdoor areas.
  • Operate and maintain gardening equipment and tools as required.

Logistics and Operational Support 

  • Move and arrange furniture, equipment, and learning resources as needed for classroom setups or school events.
  • Coordinate and assist with College event setups, including basic catering support.
  • Support classroom operations by sourcing, purchasing, and delivering required materials and resources.
  • Assist with managing outside foot traffic in school zones during student drop-off and pickup times to ensure safety and efficient movement.

 

Selection Criteria 

Essential 

  • Experience in general property maintenance, repairs, and facility upkeep in a school, commercial, or similar environment.
  • Ability to undertake gardening and grounds maintenance tasks, including safe operation of gardening equipment.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage time effectively, and respond promptly to requests.
  • Effective communication skills to liaise with staff, students, contractors, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and a proactive approach to duties.
  • Knowledge and practical application of Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Physical capacity to perform manual labour, including lifting, moving furniture, and operating equipment safely.
  • Current Working with Children Check (WWCC).
  • Current valid driver’s licence for operational tasks, purchasing, or deliveries as required.

 Desirable 

  • Trade qualification (e.g. carpentry, electrical, plumbing) or relevant vocational training in property maintenance or facilities management.
  • Previous experience working in a school environment with knowledge of operational and event logistics.
  • Ability to use email, maintenance request systems, and record-keeping software.
