Elizabeth Ford

Music Teacher, Thomas Hassall Anglican College

There are occasions when others recognise our talents before we do, and by bringing them to our attention, they steer us in a direction we had not previously contemplated. This is what happened to Elizabeth Ford, Music Teacher at Thomas Hassall Anglican College (THAC). Elizabeth was identified as someone with a gift for teaching as a teenager, when she passionately shared her love and skills in music with others. This does not surprise Karen Easton, Principal of THAC, who sees Elizabeth’s pastoral and academic strengths as key factors that draw students and staff to her for advice and guidance. Karen believes Elizabeth’s capacity to form authentic and supportive relationships with those around her is the true secret of her success as a mentor and leadership companion.

Elizabeth derives great pleasure from sharing her passion for engaging with, listening to, and playing music; especially the sense of achievement young learners have as they take on the challenge of new ideas and skills. Some of the most rewarding moments in her teaching career including witnessing the reluctant learners being won over and the joy she sees students get as they participate in ensemble performances, choral concerts, and school musical productions.

Karen appreciates Elizabeth’s consistent dedication to mentoring new staff and early career educators, demonstrating her role as an ambassador for both the profession and the values and ethos of the college. Elizabeth encourages young educators to always ask questions, to seek out professional friends and mentors within their school and faculty to help them grow and thrive as teachers.

She hopes the students leaving her classroom will do so with the understanding that through concerted effort, a willingness to take on challenges and to apply a sense of “can-do” to all they strive to achieve. Karen notes it is Elizabeth’s calm sense of directed purpose, her integrity, and her capacity to walk beside others as a guide that illustrates why those around her gravitate towards her. Elizabeth’s impact as a mentor, coach, teacher, and peer, is evident across the college for staff, students, and parents alike.
